Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer 2007
Twelve students participated in the REU program last summer. They are Back row, left to right: Ceballos student (non REU), Josh Marceau (Salish Kootenai College, MT), Caleb Marceau (Salish Kootenai College, MT), Andrew Ramstead (Montana Tech), Lucas Nebert (Wilamette University, OR), Ben Manning (St. Olaf College, MN), Dan Raible (Whitworth College, WA). Front row, left to right: Ceballos student (non REU), Mollie Rappe (Fort Lewis College, CO), Emily Gentholts (Gustavus Adolphus College, MN), Michelle Tigges (Hamline University, MN), Cherelle Bishop (University of Denver, CO). Below, left: Paul Jones (Queens College, CUNY), right: Corinna Wagner (Technical University, Munich, Germany, IREU). |

Cherelle Bishop (University of Denver) worked with Prof. David Singel: “The Effect of Spin States on the Formation of SNO-Hemoglobin” |
| Emily Gentholts (Gustavus Adolphus College) worked with Prof. Gary Strobel: “Endophyte Isolation.” Emily passed away in a tragic car accident in late June, and we miss her very much. |
In addition to the research projects, REU students participated in a series of workshops (safety, NMR, mass spectroscopy, protein structure, scientific ethics, and careers in chemistry). Weekly REU group meetings, where two REU students presented research progress reports to the group, were also held. Since two of the REU students performed research at Salish Kootenai College (SKC, Pablo, MT), we visited SKC for one group meeting. After visiting SKC, the students spent the weekend camping in Glacier National Park and attending American Indian Days in Browning, MT. |

| Paul Jones (Queens College, CUNY) worked with Prof. Mary Cloninger: “Investigation of the Antibacterial Activity of Biocidal Polymers” |
Benjamin Manning (St. Olaf College) worked with Prof. Brian Bothner: “Application of Quartz Crystal Microbalance Technology for the Study of Cowpea Chlorotic Mottle Virus Solution Dynamics” |
Caleb Marceau (Salish Kootenai College) worked with Michael Ceballos: “Heat-Shock Protein Subunit Stability” |
The REU students led chemistry workshops for high school students who were participants in a summer research program. They also went on hikes, rafting trips, picnics, and a trip to Yellowstone. The culmination of the summer research program was a poster session where all of the students presented their work. About a hundred faculty members, graduate students, MSU administrators, and other undergraduates attended the poster session. An awards dinner followed the poster presentations and formally concluded the summer program. |
