Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer 2001

Eleven students participated in the summer 2001 REU program. They are (left to right) back row: Jordan Mantha (Western Montana College), Lars Mikkelsen (Fort Peck Community College, MT), Mark Smith (Northwest Indian College, WA), Derek Warner (St. Francis University, PA), Forrest Smith (Montana State University). Front row, left to right: Kami Hull (Macalester College, MN), Benjamin Steil (St. John's University, MN), Elizabeth Williams (Middlebury College, VT), Becky Wilbur (Carroll College, MT), Brandon Schuff (Univ. of Great Falls, MT). Pictured below: Feather Rowland (Fort Lewis College, CO/Dull Knife College, MT).
The students participated in a variety of research projects ranging from natural products isolation to computational studies. The student/professor matches and the titles of the papers that the students wrote are shown below.
Feather Rowland (Prof. Valerie Copie) "Protein expression and purification of TK-trk C for structure determination"
Kami Hull (Prof. Paul Grieco) "The Synthesis and Self-Assembly of pi-Cyclopentadienyl-1,3-dipyridyl- bis-(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadienylcobalt"
Jordan Mantha (Prof. Eric Grimsrud) "A Study of the Mobility of the Chloride Ion in Nitrogen Buffer Gas"
Lars-Inge Mikkelsen (Prof. Gary Strobel) "Endophytes and their Metabolites From a Peruvian Rainforest"

Brandon Schuff (Prof. Cynthia McClure) "Organic Synthesis of a Precursor for the Phosphonate Analogues of Myo-inositol Phosphates via Diels-Alder Reactivity of a Keto Vinylphosphonate with (1E,3E)-4-acetoxy-1-phyenyldimthylsilyl-1,3-butadiene"

Forrest Smith (Prof. Steve Holmgren) "Beta-Turn Mimics"
Mark Smith (Prof. Ed Abbott) "Stability Study of Various Salts of a Polymeric Platinum Compound"
Benjamin Steil (Prof. Mary Cloninger) "Synthesis of an Amidoamine Control Molecule for Studying PAMAM Dendrimer Chemistry"
Derek Warner (Prof. Pat Callis) "The Dynamics, Structure, and Protein-Chromophore Interactions of Rhodopsin"
Becky Wilbur (Prof. Tom Livinghouse) "Synthesis of 4-Trimethylsilylmethyl-5- trimethylsilyl-3-penten-1-amine: A precursor in the synthetic development of stemofoline"
Elizabeth Williams (Prof. David Singel) "Reductive nitrosylation of human methemoglobin using diethylamineNONOate leads to the formation of SNO-hemoblobin"
In June, a series of instrumentation workshops (NMR, mass spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, computational chemistry and bioassays/separation science) were held. In July, a faculty-led seminar series was provided for the students. Jon Nagy from Ligocyte Pharmaceuticals in Bozeman also spoke on the advantages and disadvantages of different career paths in chemistry. The culmination of the summer research program was a poster session where each student presented his or her work to the entire department. An awards dinner followed the poster presentations and formally concluded the summer program.
