Instructions for Graduate Application

When completing the different components of the application, please follow the guidelines below.  We prefer that you complete the online application for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry rather than the College of Graduate Studies online application.  This allows you to submit your application at no cost to you, and directs your application directly to our Graduate Program Coordinator.

Fill out the online application form completely. You cannot save a partially completed online and return to it later. For this reason, we recommend that you print a copy of the application form and complete your answers in a word processing document from which you can cut and paste your information. Also, please list all colleges and universities that you have attended, no matter how brief attendance may have been or whether such attendance is shown on the transcript of another institution.

Applicants from the United States must also complete the questions on the Grade Point Averages section of the application for calculation of his or her grade point average. Three calculations are required (one for undergraduate grade point average, one for grade point average for your last two years of undergraduate education, and one for your chemistry grade point average. If you have any graduate school experience, also compute your cumulative graduate GPA.

Request an official transcript from the college from which you have earned at least 19 semester credits and from any college or university you attended while doing post-bachelor's work. It is imperative that you have official transcripts sent with your application materials.

Three letters of recommendation are required. Recommendations should be from individuals qualified to assess your ability and potential as a graduate student. Recommenders must seal the letter in the envelope and write their signature across the envelope flap. Do not open the recommendation envelopes.

You may submit an unofficial copy of your GRE scores (if available) with your application materials. You must also request that the Educational Testing Service (PO Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541) send an official copy of your scores to Montana State University. Use school code 4488 and the department code, 0301 for Chemistry or 0202 for Biochemistry. The General GRE is required of all applicants. The subject test is required for international applicants and recommended for applicants from the United States.

All International applicants must submit a report of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT form) or the IELTS. The appropriate testing service must also be notified to send an official copy of your scores to Montana State University. Use school code 4488, and department code 0301 (for Chemistry) or 0202 (for Biochemistry).  Applicants who have graduated from a university in the United States, or in a country where English is the official language, do not need to submit TOEFL scores.

International Applicants: The International Student Financial Certificate must be filled out completely and signed. For the application to be considered complete the applicant must submit a report of an English speaking proficiency exam, or documentation of proof of funds for $22,000.00. Such items as a certified bank statement, certificate of deposit, or other verified document will be accepted. In the case of a sponsor, the document must be accompanied by a letter with an original signature along with verified documentation. If the offer of funds is from MSU, a letter from the department/professor will provide proof.
